Windows 8 preview set for February 29

Agence France-Presse

SAN FRANCISCO—Microsoft on Wednesday revealed plans to unveil a test version of its latest Windows computer operating software later this month.

The US technology titan sent out invitations to a “Windows Consumer Preview” event to be held on February 29 at a hotel in Barcelona during a Mobile World Congress gathering in that city.

Microsoft promised to release more information closer to the end of the month.

The introduction of a test, or beta, version of Windows 8 to the public is expected to be accompanied by the opening of an “app store” stocked with mini-programs tailored for the next-generation operating system.

In December, Microsoft began wooing developers for a February opening of its first Windows Store intended to feature third-party applications crafted for computers powered by the Redmond, Washington-based firm’s software.

It will take on Apple and Google in the booming market of fun, hip or functional programs built for smartphones, tablets and computers.

Fluorescent Lamp Invented by a Filipino?

Many Filipinos acknowledge Agapito Flores as the inventor of the fluorescent lamp, which is the most widely used source of lighting in the world today. The fluorescent lamp reportedly got its name from Flores. Written articles about Flores said he was born in Bantayan Island in Cebu. The fluorescent lamp, however, was not invented in a particular year. It was the product of 79 years of the development of the lighting method that began with the invention of the electric light bulb by Thomas Edison.

Among the other inventors who claimed credit for developing the fluorescent lamp were French physicist A. E. Becquerel (1867), Nikola Tesla, Albert Hall (1927), Mark Winsor and Edmund Germer. French inventor Andre Claude was recognized for developing the fluorescent tubular lighting systems. Yet, he was not officially recognized as the inventor of fluorescent lamp. It was reported that the General Electric and Westinghouse obtained Claude's patent rights and developed the fluorescent lamp that we know today.

According to Filipino scientists, fluorescent lamp was not named after Flores. The term fluorescence first cropped up as early as 1852 when English mathematician-physicist George Gabriel Stokes discovered a luminous material called "fluorspar", which he coined with "escence". The National Academy of Science and Technology also dismissed Flores being the inventor of fluorescent lamp as a myth. "No scientific report, no valid statement, no rigorous documents can be used to credit Flores for the discovery of the fluorescent lamp. We have tried to correct this misconception, but the media (for one) and our textbooks (for another) keep using the Flores example," a Filipino scientist wrote in her column at the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

The fluorescent lamps were introduced into the U.S. market in 1938. Still, Filipinos recognize Agapito Flores as the inventor of the product that illuminated the world.

The plain and simple answer would be No.  When I was in grade school, we were taught that it was invented by a Filipino but its not. Believing our teachers that what they say is true but sad thing is there is no proof, scientific bulletin or even personal documents that Agapito Flores was the inventor of the fluorescent lamp.

My First Job - a Repair Engineer in Samsung

After looking for a job for almost 4 long months.. I finally landed an actual job - a Repair Engineer for Samsung Electronics Philippines in Calamba, Laguna.

My first impression was.. "Wow! Samsung is a very large and popular company! I'm sure I will get a higher salary and a very good benefit while working in this company." Then after signing the contract for that job.. all I can do is to sighh.. "Haaaay!.. Bakit ganito??" (Nooo! Why its like this??) and all my expectations crumbled down to me.. like an old building with dynamite detonated on its foundation.... "Baaam.. booom... kablaaaam... " and all came crashing down. My job will have a basic salary of P8,000 a month plus no benefits at all... why??? because you're still a probationary employee! OK well understood.

Even though I was disappointed by the salary.. I was still excited to report on the first day. Almost 30 minutes early to report in the Manager's office.. (by the way Samsung is a Korean company and most of its senior managers are Korean). Taken my seat on the waiting area with my fellow employee who reported also for his first day.. (good thing there is someone I can talk to).. we had a chat while waiting for the manager to arrive. The Korean manager finally arrived.. and he was late for almost 1 hour.. (talking of being punctual and on time??) then we are introduced by HR coordinator as the new employee that will be part of that department. HR left us in the waiting area in the managers office... then we waited there for almost 3 long hours... and I was in the verge of closing my eyes to take a nap or to sleep on the table.. just like battling a fighter in a Tekken match. When you are bored and nothing to do.. you can draw the person who is the reason of your boredom..

Finally we were endorsed to the production supervisor.. had a tour to production.. warehouse.. blah blah blah.. and all the daily routines. Our first assignment is to make a display chart for the daily status.. with all these stickers and markers...
First day was too long to endure.. since I have no activity (worthy) finished on my part.

Next day was the actual training.. landed my hand the first time to a Hakko soldering station which will be my best buddy for 8 months.. (imagine all the lead fumes I have to inhale.... hmmmm delicious!)

to be continued....

Technology Definitions

Technology is the making, usage and knowledge of tools, techniques, crafts, systems or methods of organization in order to solve a problem or serve some purpose. The word technology comes from Greek τεχνολογία (technología); from τέχνη (téchnē), meaning "art, skill, craft", and -λογία (-logía), meaning "study of-".[1] The term can either be applied generally or to specific areas: examples include construction technology, medical technology, and information technology.

Technologies significantly affect human as well as other animal species' ability to control and adapt to their natural environments. The human species' use of technology began with the conversion of natural resources into simple tools. The prehistorical discovery of the ability to control fire increased the available sources of food and the invention of the wheel helped humans in travelling in and controlling their environment. Recent technological developments, including the printing press, the telephone, and the Internet, have lessened physical barriers to communication and allowed humans to interact freely on a global scale. However, not all technology has been used for peaceful purposes; the development of weapons of ever-increasing destructive power has progressed throughout history, from clubs to nuclear weapons.

Technology has affected society and its surroundings in a number of ways. In many societies, technology has helped develop more advanced economies (including today's global economy) and has allowed the rise of a leisure class. Many technological processes produce unwanted by-products, known as pollution, and deplete natural resources, to the detriment of the Earth and its environment. Various implementations of technology influence the values of a society and new technology often raises new ethical questions. Examples include the rise of the notion of efficiency in terms of human productivity, a term originally applied only to machines, and the challenge of traditional norms.

Stone Age in the Philippines

Making fire out of wood and stick. It is always the women who do the job at home and men just sit and watch.. :)

Stone Age pastime or work hours?

Stone Age tools - pick one of your choice.

Stone Age tools

Imagine a world today using only stones in every aspects of their lives... yes you heard it right! You eat in your stone plate with a stone spoon and fork.

When you go to the kitchen to cook for the meals.. you have a stone knife, stone chopping board, and stone cooking utensils. You drink in a stone glass... uuugh! I can't imagine how heavy will it be. And when everything goes wrong in a drinking session.. you'll just smack your enemy with a stone glass and he's finsihed. A stone pillow and a stone bed... backbreaking and stiff neck as a result when you wake up.. everything is made up of stone.

Finding food using stone knife, javellin with stone tip, or arrorws with sharp stone pointer.

This is the normal life of our ancestors during the time of Stone Age. A time where tools is very primitive and basic. Yet they have survived and live their lives. Its plain and simple... you don't have to have everything in this world for you to survive... food, shelter, and clothing.. that is all you need physically. ☺ ►
